The slight vibration of my new Apple watch sends me a reminder. I have to stand up. It’s been one hour since I’ve stood up, and now it’s time.

It’s that crazy?

These days people actually NEED a reminder to stand up!

WTF?

For me it’s not really an issue because I don’t work in a 9-5 desk job… or anything like it. So I find it amusing when I do get the reminder.

This process has given me some ideas around what it takes to keep ourselves accountable.

Think about this: You set a goal. (97% of people don’t actually set goals – but let’s assume if you’re reading this you’re in the top 3%). And you’re on your way working towards achieving it.

Then life happens. As it does.

You’ve got work to get done, people to meet, kids to organise, functions to attend, a house to keep clean… I mean, the list goes on.

And there’s your big hairy audacious goal… sitting there in the background, waiting patiently to achieved.

So how do you make sure you’re heading in the right direction? How to you ensure you’re on track to meeting your targets and actually getting to where you want to go? It can be tough.

Unless you have a specific process or system for identifying the tasks you need to complete each month, week or day… to move you forward… how do you know you’re on track to achieving your goal?

You NEED a system.

Over the years I’ve been actively setting goals… roughly 8 years now… I’ve tried many systems.

I believe I now have the best system in place FOR ME.

Of course, everyone is different and some systems will work for you and not others. It’s important to try a few different ways to track your progress to find the way that suits you best.

What are the key components you want to track when it comes to achieving goals?

1. Where are my hours going?

Right, we all have 24 hours in the day. Where are all those hours disappearing? Let’s assume we are all aiming for the optimal amount of eight hours sleep. We are now down to 16 hours. We’ll take another 3 hours for either side of bed time. We’ll allocate 4 hours for meal times. That’s 9 hours of potential productive work time. We’ll subtract another hour for exercise – because we all know that’s important too! Hmmm… maybe this is how ‘they’ got the idea for the eight hour work day!

Depending on the goals you’re aiming for, you can adjust the hours you require.

For the next month, I challenge you to track where your hours are going. Make sure you allocate each hour to a particular category.

2. According to my current progress what must I keep going forward and what must I change?

Monthly tasks must be broken down from your yearly goals. Have 5 or 10 year goals? These too can be broken down into monthly tasks that must be completed to keep you on track.

3. TOP 3 Daily Tasks

I like to work with Top 3 daily tasks, with a few bonus tasks in case I’m feeling particularly productive. This way, I know I’m setting myself achievable tasks for each day.

These points are do-able, right?

It does take effort to keep on top of your goals and make sure you are moving towards them.

But the biggest question I get asked is ‘What if I don’t know what my goals are, or should be?’.

Now that’s a problem.

If you don’t know what your goals are or where you want to actually end up… there is work to be done.
